Do you need a degree to be able to run a successful business?

Today molliemoo were approached by Channel 5 news.
They were looking for successful company owners, who had not gone to university and obtained a degree, for an article they will be running.

With students receiving there A Level results on Thursday and with university fees being so high the main question they will be asking is whether it is worth going to university.

Both my sister and I do not have a degree but I believe that this has not hindered us. We set up molliemoo three years ago and it has become more and more successful each year. However to achieve what we have achieved, up until now has been a learning process and hard work but well worth it. If we had received a degree, depending on which one was achieved, it may have helped us to start our careers at a higher level but would not have helped in setting up our own business.

Whether a student should go to university, I think, depends on what kind of profession they would like to enter. Obtaining a degree is still important especially if the student wishes to be doctors, lawyers, teachers and any other profession which requires a specified degree. However for other professions I think it would really be worth looking at whether you can achieve your goals without a degree. Many companies now do apprenticeships, in house training or will sponsor you to obtain a degree, whilst working, therefore it may be a more realistic approach instead of having such an enormous debt at the end of university. It may take a few years longer but could be worth out.

It is like a 'honeymoon' taken by a newlywed couple but a holiday taken by a couple expecting a baby. Normally taken in the second trimester when the mum-to-be can still travel and are hopefully over the sickness/tiredness of the first trimester.

Babymoon destinations and ideas
You really do not need to go far from home for a great babymoon. We live close to Brighton and London which would only take 20-45 minutes by train which is perfect as they are far enough away from home but you will not be exhausted before starting the break.

Why not book a spa resort hotel in your own town or nearby? If you do go away, try to keep a flexible itinerary so that you can rest as often as you need too!

I would highly recommend having some time together as a couple before the birth of your newborn baby because once your precious son or daughter is born they will become your main priority and focus.

Why use cotton nappies?

I decided to use cotton nappies with both of my children as I wanted to help our environment and save money.

However it has had a better impact as my son is now potty trained at 20 months and I have just put away the cotton nappies for good. My daughter was the same and I believe this is largely due to using real nappies as they can feel when they are wetting themselves.

Here are five other reasons why I use cotton nappies:

Real nappies are easy to use: No folding and pinning like my mum had to do (and she had twins!)! They are easy to put on they either come with snaps or velcro for the perfect fit, even dads will have no excuse for not being able to change a nappy. They come in a variety of materials, colours and patterns there is a great choice. (My county council also provides me with some free real nappies to get you started - does yours?)
No chemicals. Chemicals used to absorb liquid in disposable nappies are also close to your babies skin. With real nappies, no chemicals. Don’t forget these same chemicals end up in landfills and have an effect on our environment by also ending up in our waters.
Real nappies are easy to wash. I use persil on a hot wash and they always come out clean. I also use nappy liners to keep the nappies free from being soiled.
Gentle on the skin. The wicking action of real nappies pulls liquids away from your baby’s bottom. Baby’s gentle untouched skin needs to be treated with care, what better way than with real nappies.
Save thousands of pounds. I know I am paying for liners and electricity to wash the nappies but I think this outways the cost of disposable nappies as well as the fact that they will go to landfill and will never decompose!

Just give it a go you will be amazed how easy it is to do.

Five Tips on How To Be A Greener Parent

By being a greener parent not only is it helping the enviroment but it also benefits your childs health.
There are a few ways in which you can help without breaking the bank:

Re-Usable Nappies

By using cotton nappies this helps the enviroment because they create less waste. It is said that disposable nappies create 60 times more waste than cotton ones. I have used cotton nappies on both my children and I have found them quite easy to use and wash.

Recycle Clothing

By passing on clothes to either friends, family or to your local charity helps the enviroment as the organic industry can have a high impact on it. We have done this for the last five years as my sister was the first to have a girl 5 years ago and has passed them down twice to my little girl and my sisters.

Recycle Cardboard and Paper

We all know that children like to cut, stick and colour to create there own masterpieces. By recycling card, like cereal boxes, and newspapers it not only helps the enviroment but it is a great opportunity to interact with your children.

Wooden Toys

Most young children are more interested in the box than the singing all dancing, battery operated toy. Instead you could buy them wooden or natural toys which encourage them to play with their natural enviroment and they are usually less expensive. My sister's daughter was given a wooden train for her 2nd birthday which she played with all the time and now it has been passed to my son.

Eco-friendly Food

By preparing your own food for your baby or child provides less waste and is healthier. I found this was a better and cheaper way for me as I could cook in bulk and then freeze down in ice cube trays. When they get older they can also help cook which will teach them about natural produce.

Natural Enviroment

Take your children on nature walks, to National Trust places (I have used my ticket loads as we are lucky to have three gardens near us) or just let them help and play in the garden. This is not only good exercise but will encourage children to learn about their enviroment including growing your own fruit and vegetables.

These are just a few ways in which, as a parent, you can help the enviroment without it costing you a fortune.

We have run it three times and loved the whole experience even though the last 8 miles did hurt!! :)

With the weather getting warm it won't be long before we are looking for the best spot to have a picnic and let the children run wild, while enjoying the wildlife and countryside.

Here are a few of our favourite picnic spots in sussex:

Devils Dyke - Brighton

Devil’s Dyke has been a popular picnic spot since Victorian times. There are amazing views of the Southdowns and the English Channel. It is a great place for walks, kite flying and playing games with the children like frisbee.
There is also a pub and ice cream van, which is essential on a hot day, and there is plenty of parking.

Stanmer Park - Brighton

Stanmer Park has woodland and large park areas that are great for picnics. It is a great place to visit where the children can play ball, or climb. There's an old church and a tiny village on the estate with houses and barns that date back to the 1850s.

Petworth - West Sussex

Enjoy a summer’s picnic in the parkland that inspired Turner. Take a walk to the serpentine lake and breathe in the endless open space. You can also see the largest herd of fallow deer in England.

The Wildlife and Wetlands Trust - Arundel

Why not take a walk through a wetland wilderness and picnic overlooking the water. There are kingfishers, warblers, ducks, swans,and much more, as well as butterflies making it an ideal place for bird lovers and pond dippers.

When Cathy and were looking for a unique logo for our website we came across a marine mammal known as the Manatee. By mixing a manatee form with cow attributes we came up with the very cute Molliemoo logo.

The Manatee is a gently and slow moving mammal which is close to extinction. They are Florida's official state marine mammal but unfortunately their decline is largly down to human activity and the largest known cause of death for a manatee is due to watercraft collisions.

They are beautiful grey aquatic mammals with bodies that taper to a flat, paddle-shaped tail. They have two forelimbs, called flippers, with three to four nails on each flipper. Their head and face are wrinkled with whiskers on the snout.

By increasing awareness of these mammals and through education, regulations, and enforcement the manatee deaths caused by humans could be substantially reduced and this would lead to their eventual recovery and saved from extinction.

Shrove Tuesday or Pancake day is taking place this year on Tuesday 8th March 2011.

We all have milk and eggs in our fridge as well as flour and sugar in our cupboards so make the most of the one day a year that you and your children can have lots of fun cooking, or helping flip the pancakes, together without it costing lots of money.

When it comes to the ingredients you could consider purchasing organic products, especially happy eggs. I know that in our local area you can get organic produce delivered from the local farm.

We visited the show last year and were amazed by the amount of stalls dedicated in providing the best products for your new baby. There are 1000's of products to choose from prams to nappies so you can find the best one for you.
If you need any advice regarding pregnancy or on your new born baby there are midwives and health experts there to help you.
Also you will find that most top brands will be giving hugh savings if you purchase on the day.

If you have a baby there are changing and feeding areas and for small children there are play areas although we found that our little ones got quite bored after a few hours.

Although it can get extremely busy we found that, even with a buggy, we could move around quite freely.

This is well worth a visit.

The wonders of being identical twins

Being an identical twin is great but some strange things do happen please read the following true story:

Three years ago Cathy was 9 months pregnant with her daughter and I dreamt one night that she would start going into labour at 12.30am, then 7 days later she did exactly that started contractions at 12.30am.

What makes this more spooky is that 4 days before she gave birth she woke up at 12.30am to find she had a burst water pipe in her house!

Anyway, Cathy was in labour and the following happens:

She goes into hospital at 2am having 3 minute contractions
I find myself waking at 2am having a very strange dream.
I am dreaming of trying to find Cathy in a very big hotel (I come from working in hotels so I assume this is why rather than a hospital) and I keep walking up and downstairs, going up and down escalators or going in and out of lifts. However, they would never lead me to her (even though I could hear Cathy's voice) which I was finding so frustrating... and then I would find myself outside the hotel where an ambulance was standing realising Cathy was still in there.
So I would go back into the hotel and have this same dream reoccurring again and again and again......until Cathy's husband called at 5.30am and told me she had gone in to hospital at 2am. It then all made sense.....very weird but I was obviously aware she was in pain and was trying to reach her.

Cathy and I did not believe that twins are telepathic but on this occasion maybe......

What is also very unique is that I gave birth to my first child, three years ago, which was a girl and then Cathy also had a baby girl five months later. We have both since had a second child which strangely have both been boys.....

We are so lucky to both have a girl and a boy, but what would the odds have been on us having the same and in the same order?

Should you use a mobile phone whilst pregnant?

Whilst I was pregnant with my children I used my mobile phone as normal and had it with me most of the time.

I was intrigued to read an article about a Danish researcher who had concluded that babies in the womb, exposed to a mobile phone signal were 40% more likely to have behaviour problems in childhood. However it did not take into account how the baby was brought up including the interaction between mum and baby.

It got me thinking about my own chidrens behaviour. Although they have their moments they are usually well behavioured and only really play up when they are trying to get my attention, which of course I try to ignore or the naughty step comes out.

I do think that these types of research give parents another excuse to explain their childrens bad behaviour rather than looking for the real reason. Most children only behave badly to get your attention, as long as you have a happy home with lots of playtime but also boundries then you are half way there.

My two children today have been arguing, not playing nicely and generally not getting on and it made me think of when I was younger and how I was with my sisters (I was the eldest).

While we were growing up we had our fair share of tempers, tantrums and fallings out but were also very great friends (which is still the case) .

Here are ten tips to help you with your children deal with sibling rivalry:

Praise your children when they are playing nicely together
Don't give them your attention when they behave badly

We found to our amazement that the organic beauty industry does not have to comply to any legal standards for these products. So many products ONLY need to contain 1% organic ingredients and possibility include potentially hazardous ingredients and they can still label the product "organic"!

I find this hard to believe as we all look at the front of a label and believe what it states. If it uses the word "organic" you would assume the product was completely made up of organic ingredients, but this is just not the case.

That is why we went to great lengths to find products that were made up of over 75% organic ingredients and many of the products are soil associated. (I will go into more detail about the soil association in a different blog and explain why it is so important to have this accreditation on a product)

I want to highlight the Organic Fortnight which is taking place from 3-17 September 2010.

This is a national campaign sponsored by the Soil Association and celebrates everything organic. The aim of this years fortnight is to increase customers awareness that organic is accessible and affordable - encouraging shoppers to choose organic alternatives of products they use everyday.

Do get involved during the fortnight and discover why organic is good for your well-being and your planet, it is also kinder to animals and wildlife.

The popular Organic Food Festival is being held on 11-12 September at Bristol's scenic Harbourside. It is Europe's largest showcase of the organic community, with hundreds of organic products, cooking demonstrations with Raymond Blanc and other top chefs, childrens taste workshops and a lively Street Food Bazaar and Organic Bar.

Baby Shower

I attended a Baby Shower this weekend and enjoyed it so much, I just had to tell you about it!

My friend is expecting her first baby, in four weeks time and it was decided that a surprise Baby Shower should be held for all her family and friends to get together and celebrate the future birth.

All guests arrived 30 mins prior to the mum-to-be's arrival and made sure that they parked away from the house so that she would not guess. And she didnt have a clue... the look on my friends face when she walked through the door to cheering, was of complete shock!!

We had a buffet lunch and cake before the fun began... Everyone had bought a present(s) that were for both the baby and mum incl. toiletries, clothes, and toys. It was so lovely to see my friend open all the new baby gifts and new mum gifts, she was beaming with joy.

After the gifts it was game time and we played baby bingo, guess the baby (everyone had to take a pic of them when they were a baby) etc. Everyone had a lovely time and it was great to see my friend so relaxed and happy prior to the arrival of her new baby.

I did not have a Baby Shower prior to either of my children, however, I would highly recommend a little get together before the birth. Great for the mum-to-be to relax with friends and family.

Save the Manatee from Extinction

When Cathy and I were trying to come up with our logo it was natural for us to choose animals and by mixing a manatee form with cow attributes we came up with our Molliemoo logo (which we think is very cute! see to the right).

For this reason, I want to highlight the Manatee's plight as they are close to extinction. Manatees are Florida’s official state marine mammal and their decline is largly down to human activity.

Since record-keeping began in 1974, more than 41% of manatee deaths where caused by humans and almost 34% were due to watercraft collisions (the largest known cause of manatee deaths).

They are beautiful grey aquatic mammals with bodies that taper to a flat, paddle-shaped tail. They have two forelimbs, called flippers, with three to four nails on each flipper. Their head and face are wrinkled with whiskers on the snout.

My daughter saw a picture of them and told me it was an Elephant (which made me smile) but she was not far wrong as Elephants are a close relative to the Manatee.

My understanding is that with increased awareness, education, regulations, and enforcement, manatee deaths caused by humans could be substantially reduced and this would lead to the eventual recovery of the Manatees.

Both Cathy and I are supporters of breastfeeding so are keen to highlight World Breastfeeding week that takes place every year.

The objectives of this years week are:

To increase attention to the contribution of the Ten Steps to exclusive breasfeeding

To revitalise activities within health systems, and among healthcare providers and communities to support women to achieve their breastfeeding intentions.
To inform people everywhere that protection, promotion and support of breastfeeding is a mother’s right, a child’s right, and a human right.
To enable women and all who care about human rights to fight for health care systems which support breastfeeding.
To ensure that health workers who care for mothers and babies are adequately trained to counsel and support them in optimal infant feeding.
Health care facilities play a vital role in the establishment of breastfeeding.
The Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding provide a supportive pathway enabling women to achieve their breastfeeding intentions and guiding the training of healthcare workers in breastfeeding support.
World Breastfeeding Week this year commemorates the 20th anniversary of the Innocenti Declaration that called for implementation of the Ten Steps in all maternity facilities.
During these 20 years, more than 20,000 maternities, or about 28% of all maternities in the world, have fully implemented the Ten Steps and have been certified by the Baby-friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI).
During this time, rates of exclusive breastfeeding have increased significantly. However, reduced BFHI programming worldwide, inadequate training, and weakened compliance with the Ten Steps in accredited maternities are contributing to stagnant or declining exclusive breastfeeding rates in many settings.
It is time to revisit this approach and to determine where we must go from here.

A quick shout about the Barnardo's Big Toddle event that takes place every year all over the country.

The Barnardo's Big Toddle is the biggest fundraising event for under fives! It is a short, sponsored walk which last year saw almost 500,000 todders register nationally!

The money you raise goes to projects that help children under 5. These include family centres, play groups and parenting support services across the UK.. Its all about children helping children.

This week is ran by the Department of Health, National Breastfeeding Awareness Week is a Nationwide annual event that has taken place since 1993. The theme of National Breastfeeding Awareness Week this year is Breastfeeding: every day makes a difference to your baby.
The main aim of the campaign is to raise awareness of the health benefits of breastfeeding, increase social acceptance of breastfeeding and promote support for breastfeeding. The majority of actual activity that takes place for the week are ran by healthcare professionals.

How 'organic' are organic baby skincare products?

When looking for an organic range of baby and new mum skincare products for our molliemoo baby gift boxes and new mum presents. We found to our amazement that the organic beauty industry does not have to comply to any legal standards for these products. So many products ONLY need to contain 1% organic ingredients and possibility include potentially hazardous ingredients and they can still label the product "organic"!

I find this hard to believe as we all look at the front of a label and believe what it states. If it uses the word "organic" you would assume the product was completely made up of organic ingredients, but this is just not the case.

That is why we went to great lengths to find products that were made up of over 75% organic ingredients and many of the products are soil associated. (I will go into more detail about the soil association in a different blog and explain why it is so important to have this accreditation on a product)

We wanted to highlight that 'The EcoVillage' will be making its debut at the South of England Show in 2010 with over 120 exhibitors and a picnic area. This village will feature almost 100 green’ exhibitors, interactive displays, demonstrations and a picnic area.

Having a toddler and a new baby, and my twin sister's son currently suffering from eczema. We have seen at first hand the many benefits for buying organic cotton clothing.

Reasons to use real nappies v disposable nappies

As it is Real Nappy week I thought I would discuss the reasons why you should consider using real nappies v disposable nappies.

I am currently using real nappies on my baby boy (I did the same with my little girl) as I firstly wanted to help our environment and secondly save money.

Here are five reasons why I use real nappies:

Real nappies are easy to use: No folding and pinning like my mum had to do (and she had twins!)! They are easy to put on they either come with snaps or velcro for the perfect fit, even dads will have no excuse for not being able to change a nappy. They come in a variety of materials, colours and patterns there is a great choice. (My county council also provides me with some free real nappies to get you started - does yours?)
No chemicals. Chemicals used to absorb liquid in disposable nappies are also close to your babies skin. With real nappies, no chemicals. Don’t forget these same chemicals end up in landfills and have an effect on our environment by also ending up in our waters.
Real nappies are easy to wash. I use persil on a hot wash and they always come out clean. I also use nappy liners to keep the nappies free from being soiled.
Gentle on the skin. The wicking action of real nappies pulls liquids away from your baby’s bottom. Baby’s gentle untouched skin needs to be treated with care, what better way than with real nappies.
Save thousands of pounds. I know I am paying for liners and electricity to wash the nappies but I think this outways the cost of disposable nappies and they go to landfill and will never decompose!

Lastly, it definitely helps with potty training as my daughter knew when she was wetting herself so she was dry during the day at 20 months! Then at 2 years old she was also dry at night...brilliant! I am hoping this will be the same for my son.

Just give it a go you will be amazed how easy it is to do.

3.5 Weeks to go......until the arrival of my baby!

With 3.5 weeks to go... I have got to get ready for the new baby! (The baby may arrive early but in our family all the children have arrived past their due date!)

I already have a 2.5 year old girl, so it doesnt seem quite as daunting as the first time around. However, I am currently:

having an extension being built on the back of the house which involves a new kitchen (old kitchen is currently being ripped out, so trying to cook with only one work surface now available is interesting!)
choosing a car that can fit two child seats, a dog and luggage...,
and looking after my daughter at the same time (who has just had chicken pox!), I definitely do not get any rest time!

It suddenly dawned on me I should start sorting out what to pack for the hospital (well I should be packed!) and thought I would share my list with you. I hope it helps other mums-to-be...

Hospital Bag for Baby
Scratch mitts, cardigans (x2), bodysuits (x4), sleepsuits (x4), hat, blanket (to swaddle), eco-friendly nappies/bio-degradeable sacks, cotton wool balls, small plastic tupperware container for water to wash baby (not very green, however, reusable), nappy cream, and newborn baby car seat (with new shoulder pads - as I have lost the original pads!).

Hospital Bag for Mum
Old t-shirt/shirt/nightdress, pyjamas/nightdress with front-opening for breastfeeding, dressing gown and slippers, nursing/support bras, disposable briefs, maternity towels, breast pads, essential toiletries, nipple cream, books/magazines, snacks (a must have for partner/husband!), bottled water, camera, and going home clothes.

Gifts
I would highly recommend that you do not take any additional clothes (to the above listed) for baby, as you will have close family that will visit with a new baby present in the right colour!

Remember, do not underestimate how generous your friends/family will be with new baby and new mum presents, as there is nothing as special as bringing a new baby into the world. I am very excited :)

Take Part in Fairtrade Fortnight

Please take part in Fairtrade fortnight which starts next week 22 Feb to 7 March 2009.

This is run by The Fairtrade Foundation to raise awareness that still 2 billion people still survive on less than $2 a day. Unfair trade rules still leave them in poverty, so please support fairtrade.

For this year's Fairtrade Fortnight they are asking the nation to join them in The Big Swap. For two whole weeks they are asking you to swap your usual stuff for Fairtrade stuff. Your usual bananas for Fairtrade bananas, your usual cotton socks for Fairtrade cotton socks, and your usual cuppa for a Fairtrade cuppa. Whenever you pop to the shops, you can use your wallet to make a stand.

Please also look at the website as they are carrying out Big Swap events all around the country. One that caught my eye was the Invasion of the Tea Ladies in London on 25 February. People are being asked to go along to parliament square where you will dress up as tea ladies and pose for a photo in Parliament Square before heading off to Trafalgar Square for a good ol' fashioned tea dance.

What is a Babymoon? It is like a 'honeymoon' taken by a newlywed couple but a holiday taken by a couple expecting a baby. Normally taken in the second trimester when the mum-to-be can still travel and are hopefully over the sickness/tiredness of the first trimester.

Why go on a Babymoon? For the parents-to-be to enjoy a final trip together before the sleepless nights, nappies, feeding.... The primary goal to rest and relax!

Babymoon destinations and ideas. You really do not need to go far from home for a great babymoon. We live close to Brighton and London which would only take 20-45 minutes by train which is perfect as they are far enough away from home but you will not be exhausted before starting the break.

Why not book a spa resort hotel in your own town or nearby? If you do go away, try to keep a flexible itinerary so that you can rest as often as you need too!

I would highly recommend having some time together as a couple before the birth of your newborn baby because once your precious son or daughter is born they will become your main priority and focus.

If you cannot get away, why not just buy yourself or your partner a pampering gift to relax and enjoy in your own home: Why not take a look at our new mum presents.

Cake a Difference for Bliss - 8th-14th February

Kiss for Bliss is an annual fundraising appeal that helps thousands of families that are unable to touch or kiss their newborn baby as they arrive too early, too small or too sick.

Bliss, the special care baby charity, are asking as many people to make and sell cupcakes from 8th - 14th February. Each cupcake symbolises a kiss and every penny will be used to provide care for premature/sick babies and funding for ground-breaking research.
